It varies, but anywhere between 5-15 years. Are there a lot of stains on the carpet, or mold? Any bad odours? You may consider changing sooner if it has any of those signs.
Good luck!
Hi Orpha46,
There is no actual time frame. It depends more on the condition of the carpet, your budget, and if you want a new carpet. Click on the link below to read an article from Angie's List. Just be aware that it does talk about specific companies on part of the list that are part of Angie's List, but the advice is good. Wishing you the best.

the is no time frame, if the carpet is clean and in good condition
If a carpet is cared for and was a good grade it will last many times until someone just decides it's time to change. If worn, discolored or has stains, as Nicole mentioned, it might be time.
When a carpet looks thread bare in spots, gets too dirty and will not come clean when shampooing or buckles in the centre. It all depends on whether or not you have animals and how much use it gets. A good carpet can last more than 25 years.
Depends. High traffic areas (usually public spaces) are replace more then low traffic homes. Also quality of the carpet itself can determine how often it needs to be replaced.
It should be replaced when it's beyond help, as in too worn or stained. If you just want to change the look of your room, you can change it whenever you want.
