Trim or prune? Two different things. Triming or deadhead ingredients should be done throughout the growing season. Pruning is typically done now, in late winter to early spring. These links will help you out!

I live in Southern California so have no set time. I have always kept mine pruned and trim by cutting off the old to see as needed then judicious pruning whenever a bush looks raggedy.
Roses vary based on the variety or breed. Take a clipping to a local nursery and get advise for your specific plant.
before the new growth emerges
At the end of the season cut back all the dead wood. Be sure that you do not cut below the graft. You will end up with the root stalk rose instead of the one you purchased. Through out the season keep the blooms trimmed off after they loose their pedals.
