It depends on your area and how hot your summers are. Most hydrangeas don't do well in the hot sun. They prefer morning sun and afternoon shade.

Mine is in the morning sun, and afternoon shade. It just grows and blooms. I live in south Georgia. Don't let it droop, it needs water. Don't forget Fertilizer.
I have a PG hydrangea and it is in full sun all day long and some of the blooms in the Fall are dinner plate size. The bush is loaded with pink flowers. If you happen to live where the summers are extremely hot then yes a little shade would not hurt.
I had to move mine out of the full western sun, because it was wilting (potted). It can take some afternoon sun here in zones 8-9, but not full afternoon sun. Older hydrangeas were always planted on the north side of the house here in the Deep South. So I agree with my fellow hometalkers, it depends on where you live and how hot your summers get.
Be careful if you have hot afternoon sun - you'll lose it. Cool morning sun is ok, but depending on where you live, like the others have said, I'd err on the side of caution if you're in a hotter climate.
As I said before, I have a PG hydrangea which is in full sun and which gives me abundant blooms starting in August. Some of the blooms are as large as dinner plates. If you are in an extremely hot climate then you will require some shade.
