I would take a jigsaw to it and make the handles thinner, or cut them off completely and find a couple cabinet door pulls.... http://www.truevalue.com/thumbnail/Hardware/Cabinet-Knobs-Pulls/Cabinet-Pulls-Antique-Brass/pc/6/c/2171/864.uts you could also try some metal screen door handles.
I agree with Sharon. They are overly large and bulky. You can cut them down to remove some of the bulkiness. Or just replace them.
I like them,as it is a very unique look! And after you add the mosaic, you may wish they were that large. (just one opinion!) i like....unusual! best of all on your project.
maybe wrap twine or jute around them to dress them up a bit.
Can the heavy-looking handles be removed & replaced with kitchen cabinet handles?
The handles look like they were built for large man hands. A fairly masculine mosaic or motif would be nice in that tray.
The handles have a beautiful wood pattern in the grain, I would try to enhance on that with a stain to bring that characteristic out .
The handles would be nice decorated with decorative wood pieces. That would also help to soften the design. You can purchase wood pieces at Hobby Lobby and glue them on with wood glue. You could even try adding a couple of pieces to each side.
