I’d be tempted to forget the grass and have someone put in some great assorted shrub planting’s including flowering, and low maintenance, with a hardscape path or two.

  • Not surprised. The ground looks severely compacted. If it were my house, I would start over as not much will ever grow until the soil is aerated properly. Hire a professional landscape company. They will cut the existing grass out, till, amend and level the area. Then you will have to decide on paying for sod - can be expensive if you have a large area to cover - or go with seed.

Sorry you were taken by unscrupulous garden services - they were obviously looking to just make a quick buck and not a long term customer.

if that’s summer, it could be caused by cinch bug. To see if they are there, lift a piece of sod up and you’ll see them. Skunks snack on them at night. Or this looks like what we get which we call winter kill. If it’s cinch, we put an eco friendly product on and for the other we rake thoroughly, add golf green grass seed ( which we find is the best) and good top soil applied not too thickly on top. Eventually we fertilize with golf green again. Water the seed every day gently. Fill in any holes in your lawn with top soil and seed mixed together. Filling in all gaps keeps the weeds out.
