Grow small amounts with information you can find on each one. Once you're accustomed to it, you'll be home free.
Start with something easy, perhaps in pots. Herbs are easy to grow. I would start with purchased plants until you are comfortable with growing plants. I use ten to twelve inch pots with good potting soil and put in an inch or two of gravel or rocks in the bottom. Plant the herbs at the same level they are in the pots they came in, no deeper. Use a good fertilizer as directed on the back label. Keep them in the sun and over time with little care other than watering and occasional fertilizer you should have some large herb plants. The size of the pot will make a difference, the smaller the pot, the smaller the herb plant will be. Once you feel comfortable with what you planted, take on some flowers, in pots or in the ground, you will find that your confidence will be much higher in your ability to grow things. I would start out, as I said earlier, with plants that are easy to grow as you are learning. Go to a greenhouse and tell them you are a beginner and what kind of plants can you start with that are really easy to work with and grow until you are ready to step up to others. If you are afraid of over or under watering, get a moisture meter at Menards, theirs are cheaper and work just as well as the more expensive ones that do the same thing. When it really hot out you may have to water pots daily or even twice a day. Potted plants are more moisture needy than in the ground, but they are easier to start out with. Go to the library, bookstore or even get an E-book on gardening for beginners and it will really help you learn the basics and help you plan out when you start your first in ground garden.
are some types that are easier, like air plants and spider plants; they require minimal care.

I look for plants that grow like weeds. Examples are daisies, sunflowers, morning glories, etc
This is not an answer. Just a thank you to all who replied. I will give them a try. Will post progress after a period of time.
