I always use file folder labels and write where each wire goes. Just wrap them around each wire and stick them together. It makes hooking everything back up a breeze.
When I am doing this for friends and clients, I use colored electrical tape on each cord, with a corresponding dot of the color next to the plug hole. Then also use zip ties to group the cords say 5" away from the plugs for quick reassembly. You can usually get packs of the multi-colored electrical tape at Dollar Tree. I have also gotten multi-colored packs of round hole protectors to use next to the component plug holes. I leave these on all the components I set up for friends. I am the geek everyone invites over to assemble their systems for over 25 years.
Connie, Two tips that come to mind as a telecom installer. Go to the home center and buy a roll of WHITE electrical tape. Ask if you can't find it. Make little flags for each cord by writing the id on the tape with a magic marker. Fold it over the cord back on itself. TAKE a photo before you unplug anything! Hope that helps.
Label EVERYTHING as you unplug. I f a wire goes to a yellow receptacle write it down and label, label, label. It will save you so much time and frustration. You might also want to bundle some of the wires together and use zip-ties to keep together to one device. Take a picture before you start taking things apart and maybe a couple of times during the process then look at them as you reassemble the entertainment center.
