Hi Karen,
Your best bet would be to do a bucket garden. Just get decent sized buckets, punch holes in the bottom, add stone or filler of some kind (plastic water bottles) for drainage. Add top soil and mix with your favorite fertilizer and then plant your flowers or vegetables. Tomatoes, Cucumber, Eggplant, and many other veggies grow beautifully in buckets. You can paint the buckets before hand and label them or decorate them to pretty them up too! Using Tomato cages for the tomatoes, cucumbers and green beans is a must! Hope this helps and would love to see pictures when your done with whatever you choose to do! :) Good Luck!
I went to a garden sure once and saw the most amazing thing. They planted herbs and some flowers together making a unique planting landscape. You can use just about any kind of container, just watch for how much root system a particular plant may need. Container growing as easy

If you are new at this, you might want to buy starter tomato plants at your nursery. Try 2 types to start, the sandwich size and cherry tomatoes to have a little variety. They do not like nitrogen so do not mulch them with grass, but they do like calcium (egg shells in the hole if you repot them) and also coffee or tea grounds. Tomatoes like sun and heat, but on a deck they may need watered often in the summer. My Grandma said to put your finger in to the first knuckle, if it is wet do not water, if it is dry water it well. Hope this helps some. If you get blossoms and no fruit, you need more egg shell (maybe puree and pour with water at the base).
