What can I do with my closet?

We have a Dutch colonial house and both our bedrooms have closets that are fit into the angle of the roof line. They are easily 10 foot wide, but only have a traditional door opening. So you hang clothes and then they get pushed all the way to the end and you never see them again! HELP!

  • If you wanted to widen the door, you could then add bi-fold doors and see the entire width of the closet.

Wow. I'm guessing they are ten feet wide and not deep. Sometimes you just have to get dirty. My suggestion would be to tear down the wall the width of the closet (youtube is my go to DIY expert) and frame it. On the plus side, you can go crazy with the storage when it's open. There are so many great ideas for adding shelves, layered rods and lingerie drawers to fit all your clothing needs. Ten feet is a pretty good size for a closet.

Open up the wall into a double door space would be my suggestion.

First I would check to see if its a load-bearing wall before you cut the opening..... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ws2QykJ0z3c if it is you will have to have a header (2 - 2x12" lumber) from king stud to king stud across the opening, and a jack stud that it will be resting on, and a couple cripple studs from the header to the roof plate. That gray bedroom also has an electrical box for light switch that will need to be moved also.

I would find the right doors to fit your plan for the opening before you cut back the drywall. You will need to allow for door jam 1x4 lumber for the opening and the width of your doors and hinges, or the tracks for sliding doors.

I had this problem as well. I had a contractor open up the wall, so I have double doors. I put the rods horizontal, one at the top, one at the bottom. Changed the whole situation.
