I pretty much taught myself to crochet, there is so many things you can do.
Start with simple basic stitches and keeping an even tension on the yarn, a simple pattern is something in a strip or a square. The strip may turn out to be a scarf, headband, etc. If you go wider, a potholder or a placemat.
After you get those down, you can learn to increase and decrease, making things that need an adjustment such as stuffed animals, vests, afghans...and fancier patterns like flowers. It will all come together.
