Machine wash an old plastic shower curtian and use as a tarp. They are just the right size.

I can get messy too, but I can't work in a messy or disorganized space, no matter where it is, garage, cooking, my desk, or patio for crafts. Set up your supplies, lay down an old sheet or tarp if necessary. Clean as you go. Set up stations, especially with multiple step painting or staining projects.
I live my entire life in a neat and orderly fashion. Leaves my brain free for lots of creativity if not constantly hunting for necessary items. When complete, clean everything and put it all back until the next project!
Cover work surfaces completely for easier clean up - use newspaper, cardboard, plastic, old sheets.
