This gate was so simple in design and cost me way less then the way expensive extended gate I had previously had and a real eye sore . As well as it didn’t last long with my toddler running around and tore up my drywall . I was devastated to say the least. so with help from a friend I decided I would build one . I took my measurements and double checked them twice . Then went to my local hardware store, I bought 8 - 1x4x8
I then cut them to length using my miter saw and sanded them well .
Then I layed them out on drop cloth
I proceended to glue them together using gorilla wood glue. Then clamped Them tight and wait for it to dry .
I then cut the boarder and sand them and glued them down .
after I glued the boarder I then nail them down to secure it in place and give it a rustic look.
I painted it white
Then used ebony stain and whipped down with A damp cloth .
secured it in place with dry wall screws and hinges on one side and a latch on the other.
There you have it a rustic gate .

Looks great Crystal, very clever and innovative approach to fixing a problem. By the way, pay no attention to negative comments, people sometimes correct others when they have too much time on their hands instead of using their clever minds in the creative manner you illustrated.

Frequently asked questions
Have a question about this project?
I recognize that the rustic look is very popular now, but with all the millwork on the stairs and doorway, did you consider making it the same color as the rest?
so you built a gate. and is English your second language???
A "boarder" is someone who's renting a room, and "whipped" is what you do to eggs to make meringue. I think you meant 'border" and 'wiped" not to mention it cost you way less 'THAN' the way expensive one.
Oh yeah, my question is...You don't have that gate swinging toward the steps do you?
For safety, gates should always swing away from the steps.
