It really looks like lettuce. Is it close enough to a house that lettuce seed could have blown there?
There is no scale to judge the size. If it was big and in a wet area near the river, it must be a skunk cabbage. If you pick a leaf and smell it, does it smell bad?

Looks like hydrangea to me also. Perhaps roots were in dirt thrown there. Check it later and see if stems have buds on them.
Looks like skunk cabbage. When you break the leaves it smells like skunk!
If not Skunk Cabbage then it could be if small - primrose of some kind.
Skunk cabbage was my first though, especially because of where you saw it.
I think it is a Hosta also.

I vote hydrangea too. There are wild varieties that have white flowers that aren't as full as the domestic type. 🌱
