I'd try a weed killer treatment to rid most of weeds, then a healthy manure/potting mix all over, n then grass seed!

I would reseed but first I would check soil acid and the amount of water it is getting.irrigation is very important is the south. I also live in south Carolina.

Get rid of the weeds. You could then aereate. Then throw down a mix of soil and seed. If you decide to sod, drench the soil AND the back of the sod before laying and keep watered.
