Since it is 4 days, I would put everything in the garage where it can be under lock and key. I would also bring in enough easy food to prepare so that you do not have to leave the house until the painters are gone and you can bring your stuff back in. You are far better than I am, sleeping on a mat would put me in the hospital for another back surgery!
I moved to Florida a year ago so i know how you feel. Put everything into the garage, lock it. Is there a friend you can stay with? A motel? Worst case, you could sleep on the mat, but definitely everything to the garage. Go over and talk to the neighbors if you have to and find someone to help you!
I can tell you are an independent person! Hard to ask for help, no doubt. Definitely let your car sit out for a few days and more your items to the garage. Maybe buying a 2-wheel moving cart would help with some of the lifting. And, I'd consider buying an air mattress. A twin size one wouldn't be too expensive and you would have it for later visitors. And, sometimes it is good to ask for help, though difficult for many of us to do, especially when we're in that 7th decade and not used to asking! Next week will be better! :)
I once rented an apartment that was under construction and ended up with about a week between having to move out of my old apartment and the new one being ready. I was able to get approval to move everything into the garage, and then we stayed with my parents. "We" being my seven-year-old son and I. It was actually the easiest move ever. We got the key right before Christmas, so I only moved in our beds, plus kitchen and bath essentials, and our Christmas tree. After Christmas, I brought in what we needed most until we were all set up. It was nice to just deal with one box at a time. What was left in the garage could either be given away or stored there. It was so much nicer than when I had moved and put all the boxes in the house and then had to work around them to unpack. Not to mention it's nice to just bring the furniture into the spot you want it, rather than endlessly rearranging and discovering it doesn't all work in the new place. The next (and hopefully it was the last!) time I moved, I did it the same way on purpose. I agree with Janice that a dolly for moving furniture is a must. It's worth it to just buy one. I use mine all the time, especially now that my son is living on his own too far away to help.
