Large area in my front yard where grass won’t grow.
There is a huge rock underneath this burned out area and I’ve given up on adding dirt every year trying to get grass to grow. What else can I do with this area?
I was planning to make a fairy garden in a spot like that, but then the tree started having issues and I had to cut it down. Now grass is growing there. I'd still love to find a spot for a fairy garden, though!
Hostas are a good choice for shade. There are tons of varieties, too, so you can get a lot of color and contrast.

A friend of mine put in wooden planter logs and filled the base of the tree with potting soil and planted hostas all around the tree. We helped her. It was beautiful! No more bare ground and the hostas loved it!
I have a yard with four huge trees in back and front and the neighbors all around me have huge trees also. I have hostas all over the place that just love it.
Hostas do well in the shade, just love them.
Or you could try some herbs in some spots, oregano & thyme for sure.
