You don't want it to be runny nor too dry to work with. Follow direction on the package!
Use the recommended notched trowel when installing mud. It is very important to get just the right amount installed. Muse should be a little stiff in consistency like peanut butter when applying it so it will not be too running.
Best to use premixed mud as then there are no issues with consistency. Be sure to use the right knocked trowel, apply the mid evenly in the area you can work the most efficiently, say 2'x2' or so, install tile imbedded in the mud base as that is what will hold it and tape it into place using your fist or a rubber mallet. Tile does not necessarily need to touch the backerboard as it is more important for it to be imbeded in the thin set You are then set to rock and roll!
