WHEN WEATHER WARM UP. HAVE SEEN FOLKS SPLIT ROOTS AND START
A SPIKE OR TWO IN POTS TO SELL OR GIVE AWAY. I HAVE SOME IN POT AND ALSO IN GROUND. WANTED GROUND PLANT TO REMAIN SO USED SHOVEL TO CUT DOWN AND DUG OUT ROOTS I WANTED MOVED. I DON'T KNOW, BUT IT MAY BE BEST TO DIVIDE BEFORE LEAVES GET TOO LARGE.
Spring is a good time to divide them.
I agree with Jim, if you want to split off some parts for new plants, it's good to do it while the leaves aren't yet unfurled.
I have had some luck even in summer, though. Dig up the whole hosta, divide with a sharp shovel or a knife, then replant where you want them. It might help to dig the receiving hole first, so you can replant the roots right away. Then, keep them well watered until they take.
In the spring . Divide them . Or transplant whole plants .
They are starting to grow fast in the spring, so, it is best to get to the roots and divide them before they become too large and harder to divide. This also cuts down on overcrowding. Use a pointed shovel (sharp) or a sturdy sharp knife. Water a soon as they are in their new location.
Best time is fall. They can be split. They are very resilient so you can knock off all dirt and separate.
