I've heard staining is a good technique for updating floors. So how do I stain my wood floor?
Absolutely. Lightly sand and paint or stain with exterior or Marine paint. But don’t let legs sit where water puddles. Several thin complete coats.

Or you could go for the weathered look! Sand smooth and put a semi transparent stain on it, in a grey tone.
I would top coat it with marine polyurethane. We did our back steps with three coats, and it still looks brand new despite the rain, sun, snow ice and sixteen paws from ten to a hundred pounds constantly going through the dog door.
Marine Poly.
I would use marine epoxy on it like a marine spar varnish.
