Add a Trim to front edge and Paint or finish the same as walls surrounding.

I have seen a lot of the DIY guys on TV do this often.... replace the cardboard back with 1/4 inch plywood, bead board, etc... use a 1X4 attached across the back (inside bookshelf) top and bottom... to act as framework to attach the bookcase to the wall (at the studs) Frame out the front/face frame with 1X2s and across the fronts of the shelves... a ledger board on under the edge of each shelf and across the back.. will help keep the shelves from bending under weight.... use crown molding on the top to connect the units...
