If one of your friends is an electrician have you asked him? He should be able to give you a more educated answer then a lay person.
Call in an electrician or two to get advice and costs...........
you may be getting power surges from your supplier ,but only an electrician can answer this . Your electrical system should be checked every year by a fully qualified electrician who issues you with a safety certificate ,this is a very handy bit of paper for your insurance company and you if any of your home equiptment goes tits up.
Does the electricity in your home have an old style fuse box, or a newer panel with breaker switches?
You did not specify what exactly you mean by 'damaged' appliances. Do they still function properly?
It could be that the fuses in your fuse box are not powerful enough to run the appliances, and other modern demands in the house for electricity. Or it could be that you need your system upgraded with a new panel box.
From a safety standpoint, I agree with others who have said consult with a qualified electrician.
I would definitely call an electrician. Don't wait.
