The area is along a wooden fence and in a small forest in the back of our home in front of our 17 acre lake. Thanks for your help.

    spray, spray, spray

  • Dig them out is best. I do it with my girlfriend every year on her property, then we treat the area with agricultural strength vinegar.

Use an herbicide made for poison ivy and spray at least once a week. You must be vigilant and expect it to take at least two years to completely eradicate it. Never burn poison ivy as the smoke will carry the toxin into your eyes and lungs and that could be severe. Always use gloves when pulling even dead plants, and thoroughly wash all gloves, clothes and shoes immediately after touching any part of it. As an added precaution when you know you are working with poisonous plants, cover your face, hands, arms and legs with petroleum jelly before getting dressed. It may help prevent the poison from entering your skin. If you wear glasses, always remember to wash them in hot soapy water as soon as you come inside. The poison can stay on the glasses for weeks and keep reinfecting you every time you touch them.

Hate to sound like Debbie Downer, but I would aim more for keeping it under control, because "getting rid of it" may be a thankless, forever job. I'm sure, with all that acreage and beauty there are better things to do than doing battle with a plant that you will probably never totally conquer
