Makeover Ideas for a 3-drawer Storage Tower

What can I do to turn this three-drawer storage tower into a better-looking nightstand. I need to have a flat hard surface on it so the plastic top does not cave in. I just cannot imagine spending so much money on a nightstand and would rather find a do-it-yourself way to make this work.
Buy a board from the hardware store stain or paint and place on top.
You can try looking at thrift stores or estate sales for a wooden one. I got one for $20 and it did not need any work.
Obviously you can cut, trim and paint a piece of plywood.
Or carry dimensions of the top with you and shop Marshalls, etc for a great wood serving tray. Glue on.
If youd like it, paint or Rub and Buff (craft stores) the pulls a light bronze, gold, or whatever.
