Hi Nancy, Start with a clean mirror. Use a sharpie and mark where you want to cut. Score the mirror on your marks. Then break the mirror where you scored it. You can buy a scoring tool at any home improvement store. Should be relatively cheap. Optional, sand the edges.
To be honest you need special tools its not easy you will break more than you save try and find a Glazier they have all the tools for the job.
