Yikes! If you have a really rough piece, that's the only time to paint an antique. Otherwise you will destroy any value the piece has. Chalk paint is a thicker paint that can be used without the need of sanding or stripping. It's tendency is to level itself in small scratches and dents. However, if you have major dents and scratches, do fill and repair before painting. Paint as you would any piece of furniture. Chalk paint is soft so it will need to either be waxed for poly sealed. Good luck.

Could we please see a photo of the piece?
Antique or vintage, be sure you want to paint it, as that will normally devalue the piece. I have no trouble painting old furniture, if it isn't worth more unpainted. For instance, I have a tiger oak dresser that I would never paint. I also have an old dresser that is old, but has no value. I hate the finish on it and plan to paint it one day. Having said all that, I always strip down and sand any piece I paint. It gives me a nice surface to paint. Painting over a rough surface will give you a rough painted surface.
