Store books in crates under the bed
Brackets with shelves! Be glad he wants books and not computer games! Any home improvement store will have lots of decorative brackets and pre cut shelves that you can paint or stain to coordinate with your decor. Make sure you pick up a stud finder if you do not own one so that you screw them into the studs. Make this a project you do together! Shop for supplies and install together. Teaches budget, basic homeowner skills and a sense of accomplishment.
Build shelves on each side of the door, as well as over the door.
Get acrylic magazine racks and attach them to the wall. The books fit face front in the racks, rather than side to side and take up less floor space than a bookshelf. You could also remove wallboard from between the studs in your son's room and place shallow shelves in the wall space.
