You could use a trellis and grow a vining plant on it--that will not be very wide, like a shrub would be, so you won't lose too much room on your patio. A summer-long blooming clematis would quickly expand to fill the trellis.
If you have lots of room off the patio for growing space, there are several varieties of hydrangea which grow quite tall, and they flower in summer. They have names like Vanilla Strawberry, Pinky Winky, Limelight, Quickfire, etc.
