How to prep for a Kitchen Cabinet Makeover?

What is the best way to prep your kitchen cabinets to be painted? Mine are basic blonde wood cabinets. I want to paint them off white/cream with a brown stain antiquing. I was looking at the kitchen cabinet paint kits from Rust-Oleum - would this be a good product to use or is there something better?

Also, are there any products out there to paint over my counter tops? What color would be a good contrast (cream cabinets, green walls)? Or should I just replace my counter tops with new ones? I am on a limited budget.

PS: I have also purchased a wonderful array of colorful ceramic pumpkin knob pulls to add to the cabinets as hardware. Hoping it all turns out.

You can use a cabinet kit or do it yourself: sand, prime, paint. Remove the doors and drawers and all hardware (label the drawers and doors to know where they belong), use saw horse to lay flat, never paint in the direct sun, use a good brush and small roller. Benjamin Moore Advance paint is one that works well for cabinets and use a finish that can be easily cleaned. This is a big job, take your time, and prep is key to success.
