Do not get a patterned tile. Get an all around tile that will also be easier to install. There is a luxury vinyl tile that comes in long lengths that looks like wood that you can get in light color. Dark will make room look smaller.
If you use a square tile, install it on the diagonal. And do not go less than 12".
A light colored flooring on the diagonal will do wonders for a small room. Best of luck.
