Hire a professional organizer for a day, or at least a half day. And listen to them! They will provide you with the tools to succeed. I do not always agree with them, but it can help.
When I was going through my parents house after they passed, I had one person tell me to "dump all the books, no one reads anymore" - excuse me???? My response was less than polite - not my best moment, I admit that, but really??? I read at least a book a week and my parents had collections that were worth money and were sold at auction.
Hi Binai
Decluttering can be overwhelming. Ideas to consider..... Baskets, bins, and bedside coffee tables with storage can help. My son has a large ottoman coffee table- top pops off with amazing storage. I have trouble with cluttered display, its a big effort to know when to stop. Sometimes another set of eyes is helpful to reel the decor and accessories in check.
Sometimes a trip to consignment shops to get rid of treasures is helpful. Best wishes on redefining your rooms, decluttering can make cleanup much easier.
Binai you are not alone. A few year ago a friend and I were discussing the same thing and we came up with a plan. We helped each other box up all the "stuff" in each room, marked the boxes with what room it came from and put in the garage. After one year everything left in that box was thrown away. We obviously did not need it. Good luck you can do it!
If you dont love, love, love it, haven’t used it, doesnt bring you joy looking at it. Donate it or consign it. Make 4 piles. Love it, donate it, consign it Or trash it. Keep the love it and organize in prettY baskets etc. use the money from the consigning to buy something that makes you happy or donate to a cause thats dear to you. Then always return things to their proper basket every day to keep up with clutter. Either before work or before bed. Its nice waking up to tidy room.
You need to work on one room at a time. It's not going to happen in one day. Separate your items into donate, yard sale, trash or keep. You have to learn to let go!! It's going to bring you a much more peaceful feeling and you are going to wonder why you hadn't done it sooner! There are tons of organization tips on the internet. Lots of tips on bhg.com (Better Homes & Gardens). You can do it. Good luck.
Do you have a pair of good friends who are willing to work as a team, are good organisers, are sensitive, yet firm ? If not, if you are involved with a church or community group, with a couple having those same qualities/skills.. Sometimes, we have to ask for help, in person...Of course, trust is necessary on both sides.
Empty room out completely, then put big necessary items back and then put only things you need then add a few you love. Donate the rest and think how much you may make someone happy that needs that.
Its time to purge what you don't use and improve your storage. When I help people purge their bedrooms, I start with the closet and dressers.... go through your clothes and be brutally honest if you don't wear it..... donate it. Put all the donates in bags or boxes, and at the end of the day put them in the car to go through your local thrift store drive thru next time you go downtown.
Then if the closet doesn't have enough storage, I put in a second rod to double the hanging space. Buy a wooden rod at the lumber store, 2 brackets for the end walls, and two 1x4" lumber for the closet sides (measure depth of closet wall). I usually move the top shelf up higher, so that when the length of your tops hanging, and then the new rod and length of folding pants/skirts so they don't drag on the ground. I have also put a second shelf over the second rod leaving enough space to get your hangers onto the rod. This can be used for folded sweaters or shoes.
Then you can decide if you need more storage for blankets, bedding to get some under bed storage boxes or make some from old drawers with tiny wheels. You can also put an upholstered storage bench at the end of the bed if you have room. You can even go the platform bed way to add lots of underbed storage.... YouTube has lots of them.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A315wPz9jqY
Dressers can be better organized by folding underwear and socks. Adding drawer organizers whether baskets or fabric cubes from the Dollar Tree.... or,,,, https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=drawer+organizers
One problem is the chair or treadmill where people throw off their clothes and it piles up.... get rid of the chair or treadmill. Get a laundry hamper. Put a hook on the back of the bedroom door for robes, Dollar Tree has over the door double hooks.
Dresser tops and bedside table surfaces also collect clutter.... again some form of organizer like a dish for rings/keys/wallet. Take everything else off the dresser/night stand tops.
The goal is a place for everything, and everything in its place. Read this article on what clutter represents in your life... https://fengshuiforreallife.com/Detailed/252.html
Famlly room.... if you have kids, its all about the toy storage and getting rid of the excess/broken toys, and teaching kids to put away their things.
If you have the sofa bed for company in the room, I advise using an upholstered storage cube for an end table or long one for coffee table to store the blankets, pillows and extra towels in them.
