Using up Every Bit of Old Jeans - Waistband Cushion Cover
I love sewing with old jeans , there are so many items you can make. Over the years I have made quilts, floor cushions, bags, peg bags, tablet cases - but I am always left with the waistbands. I hate to throw them away, I love the texture and subtle color differences in denim.
To create a 16" cushion cover you will need approximately 16 denim waistbands. Use a seam ripper to remove them from old jeans, I find friends a good source of ripped and worn jeans.
Think carefully about placing the buttons so the bulk of the buttons is spread across the cushion. My sewing machine would not cope with the fabric bulk if they were all aligned in a straight line. Stitch the waistbands together.
Once sewn trim the front cushion cover to create a square of fabric. Select denim to create the back panel, inserting a zip. You will find further details about creating the back panel on the blog post here.
Add a trim around the edge of the cushion. As you can see I have used a ball of wool with bobbles in a variety of oranges, hand stitched to hold in place. Partially unzip the cushion back, place right sides together and stitch around. Trim the corners, turn right side out and insert your cushion pad.
Your sewing machine may be happier if you use a quilting foot for stitching through the many layers.
