When growing onions do you keep them completely covered as they grow?

I haven't been covering my onions all the way and part of them are turning green. Am I supposed to cover them completely as they grow?

You could build up the soil a little to cover the bulb as it grows. Sometimes the sun will turn both potatoes and onions green so it is best to cover them.
I never covered my onions when I grew them and they did fine.
Onions will naturally protrude from the ground as they grow. Leave them alone. They are supposed to grow like that.
