I'm always a big fan of installing floating shelves- this way they take up less space than bulky furniture pieces and you can customize for your specific spacial needs. good luck!
If you are having a problem finding storage, then you probably have too much stuff. Let's say we start with your living room. Seriously consider what doesn't belong. Does your family dump things here as they come and go? Insist that jackets, backpacks and such go into a closet or are hung up in a designated place. Kids should take their stuff to their rooms. Do items (mail, magazines, etc) accumulate? Go through the mail when you bring it in. Dispose of junk mail immediately and put important mail in whatever home office area you use. Magazines should go to wherever you store them, but remove the previous issue to recycling. Never keep more than two issues of any magazine. These are IMO the main sources of continuing clutter.
Other forms of clutter are things you bought, but seldom or never use—books, DVDs, games, hobby materials, exercise equipment. Do you plan to re-read that book? Re-watch that movie? How long has it been since you played that game? Give away anything you won't be using again. Don't know if you have a hobby, but unless you knit or crochet more than half of each week, why are these materials in the living room? Exercise equipment stands out even more; it should not be in a social space. Having it where you see it everyday is not going to make you use it more.
A room trying to be a vignette: https://ind5.ccio.co/S8/Q1/wD/248683210643429113rSIhQzDxc.jpg Are you prone to buy decorating items? Does your mantle/bookshelf/coffee table or walls overflow with items? Visual clutter can be pretty things too. In the above photo link, other than the colors being shades of greige, there is no continuity. Where is anyone supposed to set a drink? Clear everything from your walls, mantle, and tables. Only bring back ONE item to each area. Doesn't each area look cleaner? Doesn't the room look cleaner?
