Hey Sue, aside from replacing things, paint can make a huge impact. I painted the vanity in mine. I also painted the countertop, the light switches, the light fixture and the towel bar, it made a huge difference! Here is my bathroom project (in 2 posts):

Updated Guest Bath - DIY With Just A Little Paint
Simple designs, such as Shaker or transitional. Chrome faucets, towel and grab bars, shower rod to reflect light. Larger tiles on walls and floor, mirrored medicine cabinet measuring 16"x 20" minimum, if space permits. Single handle faucets to provide a more open space atop sink and in tub area. If you pick floor tile with design that "flows", have it installed such that your eye follows the pattern from the doorway to the tub or back wall. If you build a "shower niche", note that it can be centered above the tub, but may collect more water from shower head spray, as opposed to if it is placed toward rear of shower space. Look for simple wall tile design to keep the eye "moving" and to facilitate clean up. Installing LED lights with dimmer on either side of mirror reduces shadows. Having ceiling exhaust fan with LED light, and small, recessed LED light above shower area will make the room appear much larger. Place a small simple plant in room to provide a "spa" effect.
In addition to painting and putting down new vinyl flooring, we replaced the old "normal" depth vanity with a new smaller one which really opened up the space.
