Our vegetable garden is located near a tree. Any advice?

This year we put in raised beds in the hope that new (organic) garden soil amended with compost will yield a better harvest this year. We have yet to start fertilizing. We have been watering and will start fertilizing this evening. Plants have been in place for about 6 weeks. I think the tree is the problem although we will see if fertilizing helps to improve things. We were advised to either move the garden or do the raised beds. Any comments?

  • Are the shade loving plants under the tree? There are lots of things you can grow in the shade and other things not so much

  • What are you trying to grow? Did you check to see if the plants do well in sun or shade? What kind of tree?

If you are trying to grow sun loving vegetables in a raised bed garden under a tree, all the fertilizer in the world will not improve things much. The plants need sun!

When purchasing any plant, it is important to read the tag or seed packet or Google or research to find out what conditions the plant needs to thrive. If your yard is not compatible, choose another plant.

Vegetables need at least 6 hours of sunlight.
