Early spring when the shoots appear. Drive a shovel straight down near the shoot to divide the plants.
Hi Mary! I used to grow lots of hostas in Ohio, and sadly, now live in Florida where there are only a few new varieties that can take the heat down here. I found it was easiest to divide my hosta plants early in the year when they first start to emerge from the ground, at this point they are most manageable because there are not so many leaves. I have divided hosta at all times during the growing season and had no ill effects to my plants, so if you really want to get it done, don't worry about dividing them now. Shortly after dividing, and replanting, they might droop a little, but they will perk right back up . Good luck with your hostas!
As a Master Gardener, I recommend you wait until spring to divide them. If you mark where they are, you can keep a watchful eye out for them to emerge in the spring & you can dig them up before they leaf completely out. This makes it more manageable. Dig the entire plant and slice it with a sharp shovel or large knife. If the plant is large, you can easily get 4 plants out of the one plant. Replant them & keep moist & they should take off. Great way to save money & great for your plants as well.
Hello Mary,
The best time of year to divide hostas is late summer (August or early September). But don't worry if you forget—you can divide hostas any time from spring to fall.
