How do I turn sandy ground into ground ready for plants/grass?

Pj, I had a similar problem, but mine was putting topsoil on top of clay soil. After I had 8 inches of topsoil delivered, I had the landscaper mix the topsoil up with a couple of layers of the clay soil with a good amount of sand mixed in. If I didn't do that, the topsoil would all run off after a few good rains. Now I have great soil that drains.

Not everyone in beach towns supplements their soil. There are roses that flourish at the beach and in the desert.

Go to the experts. Every county in this country has an agricultural Extension Service as well as Master Gardeners.

Google for extension service, including your zip. They are all experts of a sort, understanding your soil and weather conditions. Cry help! Experts love to give good advice.

Hi PJ So here is something that I was astounded by when I came to Florida, about five years ago. I saw all this sand, and said, wow! and How? So our county has free mulch, and enhanced dirt, basically, all the yard waste and sand , and who knows what else, is available at our local recycle center. So when we ordered the truck loads of mulch, I had no idea it was 3 big dumpster size loads, wow, yes :) So we got 2 instead. Yes, the mulch was free, but the delivery cost a little ($50). I have to say, this was not all mulch, and this is where the enhanced dirt came by. It seems that the recycle center mix up stuff, not sure what is all in there, but boy was it good. All biodegradable too! So, I saw, dirt, mulch mixed up, and this did the trick. I have good top layer building up all the time, with constant mulching, I still see sand, but whatever grows around the landscape, love the sand and dirt, and mulch mixed in! My tip: don't see sand as a deterrent, see it as part of your landscape
