Hi Joan, I would start with some clamps that are big enough to go from one side of the table to the other and fill the split with glue before clamping it tightly. That should help pull the split together and stop it from splitting more. Make sure and wipe up an excess wood glue completely with a damp rag. Once that's done you can fill in the rest of the crack with wood putty and stain in to match the table.
For extra measure you can screw some steel mending plates underneath once you have the split clamped.
