Hello Sue.
I have a bedroom without a closet too. Im considering a bed with storage.
Here's a plan for construction of a platform storage bed.
Please consider having a looking at Ana whites website. There are some awesome building plans there. You might be able to find something you like to consider. Look around for other options there -if this storage bed link is not exactly what you were hoping for.
Hope this helps.

We did this for one of our children. We bought a stand alone laundry hanger for them to use for clothes for a closet and put a nice sheet over it to close it. The one we bought was on wheels so she could wheel it to another spot if she liked. There was also a small shelf on the bottom for her shoes and purse. It was around $20. Some people use pipes attached to the wall, or even a spring loaded curtain rod. Hope these ideas help give you an idea or two.
You could get a rolling wardrobe rack from Amazon. Or, you could get some under the bed storage containers. Another option would be to get a cubby bookcase and fill it with cloth bins (or cute wire ones) to fill with your son's clothing. You could even hang some inexpensive baskets on the wall or the back of his bedroom door like this parent did: https://www.hometalk.com/diy/bedroom/organizing/organize-your-kid-s-or-kids-clothes-with-a-foreign-flair-37728026?r=2
