Sounds like a great project, Pam! If you want to change the color of the stain on the dresser, you will need to sand all of it off. If you want to keep it, you can use a product called Furniture Refinisher by Homer Formby. Have fun!
What is the quality of the wood the bureau is made of? If pine it might look more charming painted, if that would go with your decor.
