Hi Laura! I live in Florida too. belongs to the same family as English walnut, black walnut and hickory. In Florida, pecan trees can be found in all regions between Pensacola and Miami. Pecan trees are very large and are capable of reaching 70 or more feet in height and 6 feet in trunk diameter, so you will want to plant them in an open area. Pecan trees need full sun all day. Pecan trees need deep, well drained soil. For maximum growth and nut production, pecan trees need at least 36 inches of well drained soil but will grow in less if proper care is provided.
Your tree would love a sunny place with well-drained, fertile soil. But it will be quite satisfied with six to eight hours of sunlight. Good drainage is required to keep your trees “happy.” If your soil has high clay content, use our Coco-Fiber Potting Medium or add one-third peat to the soil at planting time.
Laura, I think this guy knows what he's talking about.

A pecan tree needs as much space as it is likely to spread by age ten. So make sure you have 30-40 feet of space from another tree’s span. That will put the pecan in the sunshine whoever you plant it. Best wishes ☺️
