Have been looking at closet organizers to use in my small home for extra storage. Would like input on what to look for when making a choice.

First, I would diagram what you plan on storing in the closet. Wire shelves provide excellent storage with adjustable shelves. I also use baskets along with labels for the taller, out of reach spots.

  • We bought closet boards for about $10 apiece and cut them down to size for a custom look without much cost. Then we used different baskets so that we could change it up if needed.

Does anyone have any experience with the portable closet organizers? They are the ones that stand alone and not the ones that go into a prebuilt closet.

One thing I'd suggest about closet organizers: use a style and brand that is easy to find in multiple stores, that way you can find new parts when you need them, and you'll be able to move pieces between your closets as needed.

And more economical -- have you considered 1) a 6' bookcase (if you have room) in your closet for shoes, sweaters, sweats, etc.; 2) a clothes rod that hangs on the rod above, thus double-rodding that closet section; 3) various types of cubby-hole organizers that hang on a closet rod to hold shoes, scarves, handbags, etc.; and 4) covering sturdy boxes (like copier paper comes in) with Contac paper (the real thing) and lids (optional). Walmart has clear badges used for name tags and you could print box contents on slips of paper and insert in those then hang on the box with ribbon or glue them on.
