Cut them back in the fall
Definitely cut them back...it's almost time to do it!
Cutting back in fall will reduce next years flower . If this is not an issue cut back right after flower next spring . Either way flower will probably be reduced for a year or so . As new growth comes up , best to prune that to make them fuller plants . Maybe prune new growth in half or just nip a couple of inches , depending on size .

Hi Jesse. Cut them way back. It help promote the growth at the bottom. Mine get real woody at the bottom too, so I cut trim them every spring after they bloom. When you trim any shrub that flowers in spring it should always be after it blooms. Otherwise you may not have blooms next spring.
