If the rust stains are small-from furniture feet/casters--you can use vinegar. Pour a small amount on the stain, push into carpet with the back of a tablespoon, let soak for 30 minutes. Start blotting with an old towel. Repeat if there is still rust.

Lemon juice, vinegar, salt mixed together and left to sit several hours on the stain usually works. Clean it up with a damp towel.
