HI Carol - I think the fireplace is not as bad as you think. I think the problem is it just blends into the wall. Think about changing your wall color or changing the trim - and the mantel color. Then decorate. I am not a fan of TV over the fireplace - it actually is not at the right angle - TVs should be at eyelevel when sitting on a sofa. The Mantel and hearth need decorating. Pick up the blue color with some candlesticks, a large painting over the fireplace, and some other significant piece of art like object - that picks up your blues. A lot of small things don't do well on a mantel.
I like it as it is too - u could maybe make seasonal mantle drapes? Sorry cant think of word - xmas it would look nice with pine boughs and fall use leaves. Micheals and homesense sell them. - the long .... I have seen them with cherry blossoms too. Alot are thin now so it wouldnt be too bulky and u could just anchor it at the corners. Or paint thé wall....
