It's best to prime, sand and paint with oil based paints. It is safe
Clean, lightly sand, Paint with door and trim paint.

Hi Cheryl. Start with a clean surface. Put down painter's tape. Then prime and paint. They make paint especially for trim.
What makes you think it is not safe to do? This is a very common homeowner DIY. Besides, how do you think they get painted in the first place? Someone had to install and paint them. Just curious on who may have scared you unknowingly.
