Hi, Rebecca: I don't do anything with mine which are in large pots. They die down and I leave them where they are all winter. The do get sun during the middle of the day. I live in North Texas and our winters are not usually what you could call severe! They have come back every year for five years, so it works here.

Rebecca, my hydrangeas did better this year than in many previous years because I DID NOTHING to them at the end of last summer season. This year they actually bloomed! I think "benign neglect" is the best solution to hydrangea plants -- the more care I give mine the worse they grow! Last year was a really rough winter and I guess they thrive on that because this summer I had great big blooms!
