How do I re-purpose an old Singer Sewing machine into a table?
I have an old singer sewing machine with black bottom and brown wood having 4 small drawers and a drop work space that I want to remove the sewing machine and add granite to top. How do I remove the drop leaf and should I paint the iron? What color—my entry is ocean pearl or Rhino by Bear?

Wow! You’re taking on a fun and adventurous project! I did something similar a few years ago but instead of adding a granit top, I refinished the wood top and removed the sewing machine. In the drop area I added a basket. I also moved the hinges from the side of the wood top to the back. As for whether or not to paint the metal base, that’s strictly a matter of personal preference. I would suggest leaving it until the rest of the project is done. Then, place it where you want it and decide if you like the look or if it needs a fresh coat of paint. Have fun!!
I agree with Christie on not painting the iron. Drop leaf should be able to come off, flip it over and remove hardware. Maybe you could change out the knobs with a color to match your entry.
All depends on the look you want. Here are some photos of painted machines, and even other ideas.
I saw one that was in an entryway and painted entirely with fire engine red. It made a statement and introduced one to the décor of the home. It was stunning! (I have one that I'd like to sell since my children are not interested! It was my great grandmother's but also, the one I learned to sew on!)
This blogger has a short tutorial. I love what she did with hers. http://fullcirclecreations.blogspot.com/2013/07/a-sewing-base-remade.html
Good luck!
