Lightly sand with 200 grit sandpaper to remove the gloss. Prime with Kilz Primer then paint your color. Seal with at least three coats of a water based polyurethane.

Hi Fran, Use ESP - Easy Surface Primer.
Get Krud Kutter de glosser, clean it with that, then paint it with chalk paint
