Hutch from chest of drawers?
Making a small hutch out of a chest of drawers. The top of the chest is laminate. What would be the best way to redo the top. It’s really an ugly brown.

You can get a paint designed to cover laminate or you could just add a new laminate over the old. Laminate goes down with contact cement and then the extra is trimmed off with a router. You could always make a new wooden top to replace or cover the old top.
Paint it with chalk paint
I suggest that the top be cleaned well, lightly sanded, primed and painted the color you want.
Chalk Paint works amazing on laminate. If it is a slippery type of laminate than Dixie Belle has come out with an awesome product called slick stick that will make paint stick to any slippery surface. There is an really amazing Blogger name Salvaged Inspiration that did a beautiful piece and has step by step instructions on how to paint laminate. Hopefully you will have a second to read it. The link is below and good luck!

You have great suggestions above. Laminate is trickier than wood because it has no tooth, which means not all paint will adhere to it. You have a few options. Chalk paint is a good one, since it easily adheres to most surfaces. You can also light sand (to create tooth) and prime your surface before applying the paint of your choice. I personally like to use shellac as primer. Good luck!

I created a hutch by putting shelves on top of another piece then painting it all the same color.
